Durham Constabulary issues warning over false PPI claims caller

Durham Constabulary is warning members of the public about a spate of phone calls from scammers offering people payment protection insurance (PPI) refunds.

The Sunderland Echo reports that this warning follows complaints received by a couple who were telephoned by an individual who said he was called Gary Smith.

He told them they were eligible for PPI refunds to the value of £5,000 and asked for a £200 Ukash voucher, which the offender stated was to cover administrative costs.

A spokesman for the police described this kind of scam as "advance fee fraud", explaining this is when victims are asked to make an upfront payment for non-existent services or goods.

Anyone who is contacted by this criminal is asked to contact National Action on Fraud by calling 0300 123 2040, or the police on 101.

Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary recently issued a warning about bogus calls after a woman was told she was eligible to receive a sizable payout of bank charges by a man who wanted banking or personal information.
