Bank claims: Young Brits 'are not proper grown-ups'

The global economic downturn could have made it difficult for young adults to become completely grown-up.

This is according to a poll by Skipton Building Society, which found 44 per cent of respondents believe large-scale economic problems are causing people to remain "financial teenagers" until they reach their late 20s.

Some of the top-50 indicators of becoming properly 'grown-up' detailed in the poll include knowing aspects of bank claims such as the definitions of "tracker" and "Isa", as well as owning a savings account.

Almost 60 per cent of Brits think a person needs to have sorted out their finances to become a proper adult, meaning youngsters might wish to stop making loan claims or incurring credit card charges.

"Today's 'teenagers' now will eventually mature into more financially-savvy adults than their predecessors, which can only make them better off in the long term," head of corporate communications for Skipton Building Society Tracy Fletcher said.

Recent research from Standard Life found 62 per cent of parents believe they are giving their adult children more assistance than their own mothers and fathers gave to them.
