Loan charges: 'Very few' Brits optimistic about future finances

Many Brits could find it impossible to deal with credit card charges or successfully make a loan claim, with a recent survey finding under one-third of people are optimistic about their financial future.

The report, from Santander, revealed just 31 per cent of respondents feel positive about this part of their life.

Furthermore, gas and electricity costs, bank charges and a range of other expenses mean the average UK household spends £666 every month on domestic bills.

The lender claimed the growing cost of living could stifle the nation's fiscal recovery.

However, there are regional variations, with 35 per cent of Mancunians noting they do not worry about their cashflow any more than they used to, compared to a countrywide average of 28 per cent.

Santander stated this could be because Manchester has been a recipient of recent major new corporate investments.

Some of the businesses that have recently arrived in the region include the BBC's MediaCityUK development, the new headquarters for the Cooperative Group and Cubic Motion's move to the city's Science Park.
