Bank charges: Credit card scammers 'increasingly sophisticated'

Scammers and organised criminals are using increasingly sophisticated methods to steal people's money through illegal credit card charges. reports that people are receiving phone calls purporting to be from the fraud department of a major bank.

The offender on the phone will then claim that there have been some unusual bank charges and will ask the victim for their financial details, receiving information such as card numbers, passwords and personal identification numbers (PIN).

In certain cases, the scammers have sent round couriers to collect credit cards from victims.

"The success of the fraud hinges largely on the criminals' intimate knowledge of genuine banking security procedures, which they mimic perfectly," the news source stated.

It recommended that people refuse to hand over their PIN or key it into a keypad, never tell anyone their passwords for online banking and do not give people their credit cards.

Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary recently echoed this advice, suggesting that people take down information about the caller before contacting the police.
