Older people 'increasingly incurring credit card charges online'

People older than the age of 50 are increasingly willing to incur bank charges through online shopping, a study has found.

The research, based on the credit card charges incurred through the Saga Platinum account, revealed the number of internet commence transactions performed by this demographic has jumped 25 per cent since 2010.

Just two years ago, £1 in every £13 spent was through this card was due to web shopping, but this proportion has increased to one in £8.

However, many older people are unwilling to do all of their transactions online, with only six per cent of clothes bought over the internet.

On the other hand, books are commonly purchased on the web, with online spend on these goods almost doubling since 2010.

"In general, recession not withstanding, e-commerce is growing at a very healthy rate," president of the Internet Commerce Association Jeremiah Johnston recently said.

Now you've got grandparents opening Facebook accounts and sending emails and text messaging," he added.
