Bank claims: 'Save money' by turning appliances off

Brits might find it easier to pay off their loan claims and deal with credit card charges if they turn off their electrical products.

According to a study published by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), leaving items such as computers and televisions plugged in when they are not being used costs people in the UK as much as £1.3 billion in total every year.

The investigation, entitled Powering the Nation - household energy using habits uncovered, was funded by the Department of Energy and Climate Change, the Energy Saving Trust and Defra.

It revealed the average household consumes 3,567 kWh of energy every year, with the typical person requiring 2,142 kWh.

Energy and climate change minister Greg Barker suggested using electricity wisely will help members of the public reduce their outgoings on power, while curtailing the UK's carbon footprint.

"It's crucial that households across the nation can make informed decisions by having the right advice to help them reduce their energy usage and fuel bills," chief executive of the Energy Saving Trust Philip Sellwood said.
