PPI claims account for majority of complaints to ombudsman

The payment protection insurance (PPI) misselling scandal is continuing to dominate the number of complaints made to the Financial Ombudsman service (FOS), official figures have revealed.

Overall, 56 per cent of new issues reported to the body related to PPI claims, data for April, May and June found.

A total of 69 per cent of these cases were upheld, the ombudsman noted.

Overall, 57,790 grievances were reported to the ombudsman, which is significantly lower than the previous quarter's figure of 76,522.

The next most common reason for complaint dealt with credit card accounts, but this represented just six per cent of the overall grievance volume.

The organisation receives an average of 1,000 new cases dealing with PPI refunds every day, chief executive and chief ombudsman of the FOS Natalie Ceeney stated.

"If the banking sector shows a genuine commitment to re-building trust and supporting affected consumers, we shouldn't see many complaints," she predicted.
