Bank charges: Brits 'frequently overcharged'

Brits struggling to pay off credit card charges or meet bank claims could be shocked to hear 57 per cent of British consumers were overcharged on bills last year.

The research, from, found the total value of these extra expenses hit a nationwide total of more than £6 billion.

Furthermore, 13 per cent of respondents did not receive a refund after being overcharged, with the typical incorrect bill £229 higher than it should have been,

Consumers typically spent six hours trying to recover their cash, spending around £22 each on correspondence and phone calls in an attempt to resolve the problem.

Recently, The Citizen reported Gloucestershire mother Denise Summer was overcharged £100.70 when she was billed twice for the same load of Asda shopping.

"With some household bills being so complicated, more instances will undoubtedly have slipped through the net," director of consumer policy Ann Robinson said.

"People must look at their bills and not take it for granted that a company has got its sums right," she added.
