The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) is reviewing the personal current account sector. It is examining whether bank charges incurred through these accounts have been made more transparent, if the process or switching between lenders has been improved and if members of the public are better able to manage their finances. This is part of a long-term programme aimed at improving the consumer focus of the banking industry and dealing with competition concerns. In 2008, the OFT conducted a market study into these issues and the review will determine how the sector has responded to this.As well as examining issues relating to current accounts, the public body intends to find out how the banking sector works for small and medium-sized enterprises and payment systems' operations."Misselling, unfair charges, high levels of complaints, opaque products with complex terms and conditions and a sector dominated by a handful of big banks and building societies" indicate that people are not being well served by the industry, Consumer Focus director of external affairs Adam Scorer said.Samantha Clarke Samantha is a former banking assistant and has over ten years experience in retail banking.
