Bank claims: Financial education 'needs intelligent integration'

People might be able to avoid loan charges and credit card claims as adults if they were educated in finance when they were children.

Occupational psychologist Kim Stephenson claimed parents and teachers both want this to become a compulsory part of the educational curriculum.

He suggested that it should be integrated into schools intelligently, so it does not put students off and is not considered a "pointless subject".

The expert, who is also the author of Taming the Pound: Making Money Your Servant, Not Your Master, suggested these lessons should aim to catch students' interest, rather than put them off.

While financial education could be easily integrated into computing or mathematics courses, Mr Stephenson claimed that "with thought", it could also be implemented into geography, history or "any other area".

Real-life experiences could improve the success of these lessons, he remarked.

A recent study from the Chartered Insurance Institute revealed only 27 per cent of students think they have been taught basic budgeting skills in their education.
