Bank charges: Many people 'unaware' of chip-and-signature cards

People who are unable to use Personal Identification Numbers (PINs) when making credit card charges are being targeted by the Payments Council.

The organisation is reaching out to members of the public, stakeholder groups and retailers to raise awareness of chip-and-signature cards.

These can be used to make bank charges in much the same way as cards with PINs, but the terminal prompts users to authorise transactions with their signature instead of a secret number.

Research by the Payments Council found 26 per cent of store visits undertaken by mystery shoppers resulted in a person feeling anxious or embarrassed when using chip-and-signature cards, with retailers often causing hold-ups by being unaware of how the devices work.

Many people have difficulties with PINs, including those with memory problems, dexterity issues, blindness or poor mobility.

"We're keen to make sure that people know of chip-and-signature so that they can consider it as an alternative if they feel it might make things easier for them," Payments Council chief executive Adrian Kamellard said.

This is part of the Pay Your Way campaign, which aims to educate Brits about the different ways they can make transactions.
