Parents 'will make credit card claims' to deal with summer holiday expenses

Many parents are incurring credit card charges to keep their children entertained over the summer holidays.

Research from Post Office found 19 per cent of mothers and fathers said they will make credit card claims to deal with the expense of keeping their offspring happy during the six-week school break.

Furthermore, 64 per cent admitted they are worried about how expensive this period will be.

Some of the largest costs parents are concerned about include visiting attractions, with 44 per cent expecting this to be the most significant expense, followed by eating out at 30 per cent.

While 32 per cent of parents have saved money in preparation for the holidays, 14 per cent plan to sell their goods over eBay and 13 per cent will work overtime.

"There are always free events or special deals which help keep costs down," Post Office marketing director Doug Strachan remarked.

According to insurance firm LV='s Cost of a Child report, raising a youngster from birth to the age of 21 costs the typical family £218,024.
