PPI refunds: Brits 'more vulnerable to scams'

The current financial climate and the squeeze on people's pockets are leaving the average person more vulnerable to scammers than they used to be.

This is according to Informed Choice certified financial planner Catriona Lumiste, who suggested that the phrase "if it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is" is still relevant.

A number of scams and frauds have been reported recently, with criminals claiming to be helping people with PPI claims or falsely telling them suspicious bank charges have been seen in their financial accounts.

Ms Lumiste argued these frauds are becoming increasingly sophisticated, while consumers are struggling with cash.

These two factors "may make people fall for [scams] more easily", she declared.

Anyone who has been targeted by a scammer or is a victim of this type of crime should contact the Office of Fair Trading or the police immediately, the expert suggested.

She remarked that this could "spread awareness" of the incident and reduce the likelihood of other people being affected by the same con.
