Holidaymakers 'incurring large credit card charges'

Brits have been warned they could face expensive credit card charges while on holiday.

Post Office Credit Card research found the average Brit using this payment option incurred an average of £12 in bank charges while overseas.

People aged 18 to 34 were more likely to be impacted by these transaction costs, racking up an average of £23 in credit card charges, compared with £5 among those over the age of 55.

Men typically spend £494 on holiday, compared with £428 spent by women, the study found.

Some lenders have credit card changes of as much as 2.99 per cent for every transaction processed, which could leave people without fee-free cards incurring sizable excess expenses. recently suggested one cash withdrawal in a foreign country typically results in banks charging £2.75.

"As millions of people prepare for their summer getaway, we urge them to play their cards right and make sure they are not stung by hefty credit card charges," head of credit cards at Post Office Az Alibhai said.
