PPI claims scam hitting Blaenau Gwent

Residents of Blaenau Gwent have been warned about a scam that involves cold callers offering to help people reclaim missold payment protection insurance (PPI).

The South Wales Argus reports that the council's trading standard's body has received a number of complaints about a cold caller informing people that they can make PPI claims.

However, the individual states that an administration fee is required before the PPI refund can be received, with this expense ranging from £89 to £245.

The victim of the scam is asked to purchase a Ukash voucher to cover this charge and the caller then calls them back and ask for the voucher number.

When this information is divulged, the caller will then cash the Ukash money in online, but the victim will never receive their PPI compensation.

"The simple rule remains - if a call like this comes out of nowhere and seems too good to be true, there's a good chance it could be scam," justice minister Jonathan Djanogly recently said.
