Credit card charges analysis reveals 'summer of social spending'

Brits will incur more bank charges in restaurants and bars this summer than they did a year ago, Santander has predicted.

An analysis of the lender's customers' credit card charges revealed that people spent 27 per cent more money on dining and drinking establishments in July to September 2011 than they did during the rest of the year, as well as performing 21 per cent more transactions.

Santander forecasts that Brits will spend even more this year to celebrate sporting successes and the summer weather.

There is a "summer of social spending", the bank claimed, noting members of the public are socialising with family and friends during the warmer months.

Furthermore, men are spending significantly more than women in restaurants and pubs, with 67 per cent of all money spent and 66 per cent of transactions made in these businesses undertaken by males.

"Last year, we saw a marked increase in how much customers spent in restaurants and bars over the summer months," Santander Cards chief executive officer Alan Mathewson said.
