Bank charges and debts 'causing stress for students'

Credit card charges are a significant source of stress for students, research has found.

A poll of university attendees by revealed that 61 per cent of respondents said that money was one of their biggest stressors at present.

Only exam pressures pose a more significant form of anxiety for students, as this was cited by 65 per cent of the people surveyed as one of their largest worries.

As well as bank charges and unsustainable loan claims, rent, tuition fees and utility bills represent some of the financial stresses students face.

Furthermore, 38 per cent said that leaving university with a large student debt was one of their key concerns.

Other worries included juggling other commitments with university work (53 per cent), finding employment after graduation (48 per cent) and meeting new housemates and people (26 per cent).

"Having to perform the juggling act of managing their own finances, staying on top of domestic chores, maintaining long-distance relationships and excelling in their studies can have the effect of overwhelming some,"'s business development director John Miles said.
