Credit card charges: British tradespeople working over five hours unpaid every week

The majority of British tradespeople are working unpaid overtime every working week, according to new research.

Direct Line for Business found that seven in ten tradespeople do extra work every week without getting any financial reward. This is worth some £4.8 billion to UK economy annually.

The average tradesperson carries out 5.29 hours of unpaid work a week, totalling 275 hours across a year and £1,702 in wages, based upon the minimum wage, which could lighten the financial burden of credit card charges.

One in ten individuals work more than ten extra hours a week, which amounts to 520 hours a year.

"Tradespeople are the unsung heroes leading the way in nursing our economy back to health," said Jazz Gakhal, head of Direct Line for Business.

"The research shows that, despite the sometimes negative publicity that surrounds the work ethic of tradespeople, they are doing more than their fair share and setting the right example for the rest of the UK's workforce."
