Loan charges: Ofcom fined for abandoned calls

Watchdog Ofcom has found Npower guilty of breaching rules regarding abandoned calls, imposing a financial penalty of £60,000 for the violation.

An investigation found that the firm had made 1,756 abandoned calls to UK numbers over a seven-week period, playing marketing messages to those on the other end.

The case was found to breach legislation and Ofcom rules, but it was not one of the most serious incidences the firm has dealt with, which could have been from companies that impose loan charges.

Abandoned calls occur when a consumer picks up a phone to find a message being played down the receiver, rather than a person talking on the other end.

"Our rules are there to protect consumers from suffering annoyance, inconvenience or anxiety from abandoned calls," said Ofcom's consumer group director Claudio Pollack.
"Organisations using call centres must comply with the rules or face the consequences."
