Loan charges: More than half of Brits plan to stick to a budget in 2013

Some 27 million Brits intend to stick to a budget in 2013, new research has revealed, amounting to more than half of the population.

Thinkmoney found that it was the 18 to 34 age group that is most likely to make budgeting a priority in 2013, with 64 per cent of respondents in this bracket saying they are committed.

Furthermore, some 41 per cent of people (21 million) say they will shop around for cheaper tariffs for outgoings such as utilities and mobile phones and 31 per cent (15 million) will pay off non-mortgage debts, which will mean they will avoid being hit by loan charges and credit card charges.

"2013 is set to be a challenging year," commented Ian Williams of thinkmoney. "Benefits being capped, wages stagnating, the threat of a triple-dip recession - we all have plenty to worry about as the year gets underway.
"So it's encouraging to see households attaching so much importance to their finances."
