Credit card charges: Millions of Brits owe money on utilities

The sluggish economy has been tough on many people in the UK, as rising costs force some people closer to the breadline, and push some further into debt.

A new study from the Debt Advisory Centre Scotland found that around one in four Scottish adults has ignored a utility bill for some time after it lands on their doormat, simply because they do not have the money to pay it.

Around 17,000 Scottish people are in arrears to one or more of their utility providers, and over a quarter of Scots - while not in arrears - have ignored a bill.

In the UK overall, over two million people are in debt to their water company, with slightly fewer owing money to their gas and electricity providers.

Ian Williams from the Debt Advisory Centre Scotland  said that often utility bills can drop down the list of priorities when people are trying to meet charges for borrowing and pay their rent or mortgage.

"Some people get into utility arrears because other debt repayments - like for credit cards and personal loans - get 'in the way'. If this is the case, you need to seek professional debt advice as soon as you can,” he said.
