Bank charges: RBS app glitches again

For the second time in two months, Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) customers have been held up by glitches in the bank's mobile phone app.

Users of RBS and its subsidiaries, Natwest and Ulster bank, were unable to use the app for two hours on May 24th.

Consumer magazine Which? said that the increasing reliance of consumers on mobile applications for banking means that banks should ensure that their IT systems are free of issues. This would assure customers that their money is safe at all times.

It said: "These frequent glitches continue to raise questions about how robust and reliable banks’ IT systems are."

Yet it is not only in its mobile app that RBS has experienced technical problems. Earlier this year, users were locked out of online and telephone banking due to a computer malfunction.

More seriously, last summer, customers were locked out of their accounts for days following a software update. This made them unable to receive payments or pay bills until the problem was fixed.
